During the week of April 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

During the week of April 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, five; Kona, four; South Kohala, two; and Puna, one.

So far this year, there have been 400 DUI arrests compared to 361 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.8 percent.

There have been 456 major accidents so far this year compared to 484 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.8 percent.

To date, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities, the same as at this time last year. There also were three automobile-related deaths not counted toward the official total by police because two occurred on private property and the third in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
